Notes: Sighted adjacent to Black Rocks sports field (Pottsville) which is located 300 metres inside core koala habitat at the junction of three koala linkages in the middle of a regional wildlife corridor. The sports field access road dissects a koala breeding area.
A National Parks and Wildlife Service response in 2002 prior to the sports field being constructed states that the sports field will introduce disturbance into the area and sever the corridor. Three Black Rocks koalas with the stress-related disease chlamydia have been euthanased since January 2014, and another untreated koala is believed to have died.
Tweed Councillors Longland, Byrne, Polglase and Youngblutt voted to replace the koala protection gates at the entrance to the access road with a koala grid, which will allow vehicular and human disturbance both night and day. Several ecologists have called for the Black Rocks Sports field to be revegetated with koala food trees.
